High resolution MR Imaging of the knee on a patient with radial tear of the pars intermedia/posterior horn of the medial meniscus. The MRI protocol was based on orthogonal (axial, coronal, sagittal) PD-w FS, coronal T1-w and sagittal PD-w acquisitions.
Radial meniscal tears are the most common type of meniscus tear. They run perpendicular to the long axis of the meniscus. They violate the collagen bundles that parallel the long axis of the meniscus.
Radial tears often disrupt the hoop strength of the meniscus with resultant loss of function and possible meniscal extrusion.
