Orthopedic Notes for Medical Students: Ankle Sprain

Orthopedics Notes for Medical Students: Ankle Sprain also known as every high school athlete’s worst nightmare.

For evaluation, diagnosis, or treatment of an ankle sprain, you may see: An emergency medicine doctor. A primary care professional (family medicine doctor, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, general practitioner, or internist). An orthopedist.

An ankle sprain can occur to either the inside (medial) or the outside (lateral) ligaments of the ankle. A ligament is a band of connective tissue in the body that connects two bones together. These structures are easy to tear and damage when a joint is forced into a position it is not normally in.
